If you spend your working day at a computer, there’s a good chance your shoulders, neck and upper back have something to say about it. That tight, achy feeling at the end of the day isn’t just tiredness — it’s your muscles telling you they’re overworked, underused and stuck in positions they were never designed to hold for hours at a time.

What sitting does to your body

When you sit at a desk, particularly if your setup isn’t ideal, your body adapts in ways that aren’t helpful. Your shoulders round forward. Your head drifts ahead of your spine. The muscles in your upper back and neck work overtime to hold everything in place, while the muscles in your chest and the front of your shoulders shorten and tighten.

Over weeks, months and years, this leads to persistent tension, reduced range of motion and pain — often across the top of the shoulders, the base of the skull and between the shoulder blades.

How sports massage helps

Sports massage directly targets the muscles that are holding tension. Your therapist uses focused, deep tissue techniques to:

•       Release tight muscles in the neck, shoulders and upper back

•       Improve blood flow to areas that have become stiff and restricted

•       Break down adhesions and “knots” that build up from sustained posture

•       Restore range of motion in the neck and shoulder joints

•       Reduce the headaches that often come with upper back and neck tension

Many desk workers describe the feeling after a session as a “reset” — like the weight has literally been lifted off their shoulders.

How often should desk workers get a sports massage?

If you’re dealing with a specific issue, a short course of weekly or fortnightly sessions can make a significant difference. For ongoing maintenance, many of our patients find that a monthly session keeps them feeling comfortable and moving well between appointments.

A few things you can do between sessions

•       Stand up and move every 30–45 minutes during the working day

•       Stretch your chest and the front of your shoulders regularly

•       Check your screen height — your eyes should be roughly level with the top third of your monitor

•       Keep your keyboard and mouse close to your body to avoid reaching

If your desk is taking a toll on your body, book a sports massage with Jenny. Your shoulders will thank you.
