The name “sports massage” is one of the most misleading terms in healthcare. It suggests you need to be a runner, a footballer or a gym regular to benefit from it. The truth is, sports massage therapy is for anyone with a body that moves — or one that’s struggling to.

What sports massage actually is

Sports massage is a targeted, deep tissue treatment that works on your muscles, tendons and ligaments to reduce tension, improve flexibility and help your body recover. It’s based on exercise science and how your body responds to stress, load and movement.

Unlike a relaxation massage, it’s focused and functional. Your therapist works on the specific areas that need attention — releasing tight muscles, improving blood flow and helping restore comfortable movement.

Who benefits from sports massage?

At our clinic, Jenny sees patients from every walk of life. Here are some of the people who regularly benefit from sports massage:

•       Desk workers with tight shoulders, neck stiffness and upper back tension from sitting all day

•       Parents dealing with lower back strain from lifting, carrying and the physical demands of family life

•       Gardeners and manual workers with aching muscles and repetitive strain

•       Weekend walkers, golfers and recreational sportspeople who want to recover faster and prevent injuries

•       Older adults who want to maintain flexibility and comfortable movement as they age

•       Anyone recovering from an injury or surgery who wants to support their rehabilitation

What does it feel like?

Sports massage uses firm, targeted pressure — it’s deeper than a spa massage and focused on results rather than relaxation. Some areas might feel tender during treatment, particularly if you’re holding a lot of tension, but your therapist will always work within your comfort level and check in with you throughout.

Most people feel noticeably looser and more comfortable after a session. Some experience mild soreness for a day or two afterwards as the muscles adjust — similar to how you might feel after a good workout.

How often should you go?

That depends on your needs. Some people come fortnightly for maintenance. Others book in when something specific is bothering them. If you’re not sure, a single session is a great starting point — Jenny can advise you on what would work best from there.

If your body isn’t moving the way it should, sports massage could be exactly what you need. Book a session with Jenny and find out.
