You love your weekend sport. Maybe it’s golf, a park run, a long hike, five-a-side football, a hockey match or a couple of hours on the padel court. It’s the highlight of your week.

But by Monday morning, your body is reminding you that you spent the other five days sitting at a desk.

If this sounds familiar, you’re what’s affectionately known as a “weekend warrior” — and sports massage therapy could be one of the best things you do for your body.

The weekend warrior problem

The challenge for recreational sportspeople is the contrast between weekday and weekend activity levels. Your body spends most of the week relatively sedentary, then suddenly asks muscles, joints and tendons to perform at a level they’re not regularly conditioned for.

This mismatch increases the risk of muscle strains, joint stiffness, tendon irritation and those frustrating niggles that never quite go away. Over time, small issues can become bigger ones if they’re not addressed.

How sports massage helps

Regular sports massage therapy works on multiple levels to keep you performing and recovering well:

•       Reduces muscle tension and tightness that builds up between sessions of activity

•       Improves flexibility and range of motion, making your body more resilient when you do push it

•       Speeds up recovery by increasing blood flow and helping clear metabolic waste from fatigued muscles

•       Identifies potential problem areas early — your therapist can often feel tension building before it becomes an injury

•       Helps you maintain consistency with your sport by keeping your body in better condition week to week

When to book

There are two effective approaches. You can book a session 24–48 hours after your weekend activity to help your body recover. Or you can book regular maintenance sessions — say fortnightly or monthly — to keep on top of things proactively.

If you’ve got a specific event coming up — a charity run, a tournament, a walking holiday — a short course of sessions in the weeks beforehand can help you prepare and reduce the risk of injury.

It’s not about being “serious” about sport

You don’t need to be competing at a high level to benefit from sports massage. If you’re doing any regular physical activity and you want your body to feel better, move better and keep going for longer, it’s worth considering.

Our sports therapist Jenny works with people at every level — from competitive athletes to people who just want to enjoy a round of golf without aching for three days afterwards.

If your weekends are active but your body isn’t keeping up, book a sports massage with us and let’s get you recovering faster.
